Platform Support Changes
IDL 7.1 is available for Windows, Macintosh OS X, Solaris, and Linux platforms. See Hardware and Operating System Requirements for complete details.
The following enhancements have been made to IDL's platform support for the 7.1 release:
64-bit IDL for Intel-based Macintosh
Note
This enhancement was released to IDL for Macintosh customers as IDL 7.0.4.
Beginning with IDL version 7.0.4, IDL can run as a 64-bit application on Macintoshes that run OS X 10.5.1 (Leopard) and later using an Intel 64-bit CPU. As a 64-bit application, IDL can address of up to four terabytes of physical memory.
Note that IDL can still run as a 32-bit application on a 64-bit Macintosh if requested. See Feature Support by Operating System for details of features that are not supported when IDL runs in 64-bit mode.
IDL for 64-bit Solaris X86 Systems
Beginning with IDL version 7.1, IDL can run in command-line only mode on 64-bit Solaris X86 systems. Note that the following are not supported:
IDLffDicomEx on 64-bit Windows
The IDLffDicomEx object and the IDL DICOM Network Services now allow you to access, read from, and write to DICOM files on 64-bit machines running Microsoft Windows.
