Views

Views are movable windows inside the IDL Workbench that display data, do analyses, and allow you to interact with the command line interpreter and compiled programs. For example, the Console view displays output from the command line and compiled programs.

Views have their own toolbars, located on the top right of the view window. The actions represented by buttons on view toolbars only affect the items within that view. Some views have a menu on the toolbar that displays further view options. To open a view menu, click the Menu button on the toolbar.

Moving Views

A view might appear by itself or stacked with other views in a tabbed window. You can change the layout of a perspective by opening and closing views and by docking them in different positions in the Workbench window.

There are a number of options for moving views:

You can move a view to another location by clicking on the view's tab and dragging it to another spot on the Workbench. You can move a view so that it occupies its own window, or you can move a view into a group of existing views (as a new tab).

A view tab's context menu contains the Detached option, which allows you to detach the view into its own Workbench-independent window. The context menu's Move  View option lets you move a single view, and the Move  Tab Group option lets you move a group of views (as a collection of tabs).

Maximizing Views

You can maximize a view within the workbench interface by double-clicking on the view's tab. All other views are automatically minimized. Double-click on the view's tab again to restore it all other views to the original size.

Hiding and Revealing Views

You can hide a view window (containing one or more views) by clicking the Minimize button on the view toolbar or by selecting Minimize from one of the view tab's context menus. When you minimize a view window, it will condense into a toolbar along the nearest Workbench margin.

To restore a particular view, click the view's button on the margin toolbar. To restore the entire window of views, click the margin toolbar's Restore button.

Fast Views

Another way to hide or reveal a view is to turn it into a fast view. Fast views are minimized as buttons on a toolbar at the bottom of the Workbench. Pressing a fast view button expands the view, and pressing the fast view button once more minimizes the view again.

To turn a view into a fast view, right-click on a view tab and select Fast View. You can also click Show View as a fast view on the fast view toolbar and select a view from the list.
